How a Democrat becomes President in 2009

It's clear, looking at the Republics, they already have their back against the wall, an unpopular and costly war, an economy already in a recession now heading for massive inflation, and a sitting Republic President with the worst approval numbers in modern history?

So, even though through no wisdom on their own, they choose the most electable candidate from their stunningly weak pack (I sure would rather be running against Mittens or Rudy-Rudy-Rudy) I'm hoping our candidate decides to hand Senator McCain and the rest of the Republic party an anchor and then shoves them in the lake while they are holding it.

I expect the Democratic candidate to announce after the convention, in a speech that will echo John Kennedy's Man on the Moon speech, that the USA is embarking on a NEW Apollo Program, one designed to unlock us from the death grip Oil has on our economy, our foreign policy, and, to create along the way, the 21st Century answer to the US Semiconductor and Computer industry (which is directly traceable to the US Space Program and large investments in the private sector that drove it to be the dominant industrial sector in the last decades of the 20th century.)

I expect some target figure, like being 50% energy independent by the year 2025?

I expect that this speech will be given in a very formal setting, with an announcement of a panel of experts that are to deliver the outline and strategic plan for this program 90 days after the candidate in inaugurated (and, yes, that will put the date for completion till after the election...politics being a game of strategy.)

I expect this panel to encompass high profile members from the business sector, (and YES, I think it will include members from the traditional energy sectors...They have to be involved in this, as reprehensible and robber-baron like their current behavior) the academic scientific sector, leading economists, representatives from the Military, and representatives from the Environmental movement?

I expect SOME of the topics the speech will outline are:

A plan to increase funding for academic scholarships, for anyone student in material sciences, engineering, environmental research, to be able to get a 100% free ride as long as they agree to work in this effort for at least 5 years after leaving college?

To announce a plan for investment and research tax breaks for companies that are directly involved in this program.

To directly involve the Military, and how they need to be energy independent as a strategic necessity?

To directly address the environmental issues, global warming, pollution of the land and water, etc.

And, of course, I expect the speech to be proactive, and go straight at the main Republic attack on this initiative, the cost by simply stating:

How can we NOT afford to do this?

Of course, I expect a lot more eloquence from the nominee but you get the gist of the idea.

I also have a name in mind for the person to lead this committee, rhymes with Pal Floor?

Oh, and yes, I expect the nominee to ask the Republics to join us in this endeavor, and Senator McCain, when you're back in the Senate, you can be part of it as well?

Solve the Florida/Michigan problem that is satisfactory to all parties involved. Pick a vice president that will heal the wounds incurred from the primaries. Then let the wind blowing against the Democrat's back sail them past the Republicans.

In other words, (to the Democrats) get your act together and you will win big in Novemember.

Re: How a Democrat becomes President in 2009 (2.00 / 1)

One wing of the Democratic part is actively at war with the other wing.

The Kos/Obama/Dean wing is actively trying to kill the careers of the Lieberman/DLC/Clinton wing.

We the DLC wing of the party are not going to vote for you as you try and drive us from the party.

Clearly from Hillary's results we represent a large slice of the party.

Love us or leave us.

But we won't be voting for haters.

Er... did you read the diary? Or just see who posted it and write what you wanted?

This is not a candidate diary. There are plenty more elsewhere if you want to make your voice heard

This is a great idea. I think Tom Friedman suggested the same thing, only phrasing in terms of the investment, innovation and urgency of the Manhattan Project.

But the Apollo project is a much more positive example.

I would rec if I could.

Manhattan project is the other great analogy, and, again, the science generated during that project drove industry for decades?

I can't see anything but pluses for this idea?

It also says THE DEMOCRATIC party is the party of BIG IDEAS!

Harken to BOTH the Manhattan project and the Apollo Program?

FDR and JFK?  I can go with that.

Re: How a Democrat becomes President in 2009 (none / 0)

Yeah. Let's get it out there. Did you come up with the Apollo thing, or did you read it somewhere?

Though I'm British, and my mother lived to see the British Empire collapse from occupying a quarter of the world, to a second rate power, we did at least expend that capital on something good - i.e. fighting the Nazis (with US help of course). I always think Frodo's throwing of the ring into mount doom is a mythic equivalent of what Britain did in World War II.

Some say that the US is losing it's hegemonic military power and social influence. That's debatable.

What is not debatable is that only the US has the resources, the technical innovation and know-how, to complete a project to rid the world of dependence on oil, and to help ameliorate climate change.

What a great legacy that would be: equivalent in terms of vision and excitement to JFK's Apollo project, and in terms of urgency and national interest, to Roosevelt's Manhattan project.

What can we call it? Is there some name that combines both Manhattan and Apollo? Prometheus? No. Spiderman? Only kidding. Any suggestions?

Re: How a Democrat becomes President in 2009 (none / 0)

I'm sure I have read it somewhere, but I haven't read or seen the idea lately.

I figured I was going to get some drive by dive bombers, I DID this post because ALL that seems to be happening here is anger, finger pointing, and 80% negative candidate diaries?

Figured I would try to see if people were interested in discussing more then just who did what to whom and when, etc...etc....etc....

One thing Democrats DO need to do is fight back isthis 30 year mantra, started by Reagan and perfected by RightWing Radio, that ANYTHING the Goverment does sucks....

My parents remembered the New Deal, WW2, and that success?

My generation remembers the Appolo Program?

ONLY the Government can handle this issue, private industry will be too little too late.

Nibbling around the edges isn't going to get it done, we need to roar head on at it?

Re: How a Democrat becomes President in 2009 (none / 0)

We win by realizing that millions of lives are in stake this election, not our too-fragile feelings, and fighting accordingly. The countless innocents who cry for relief from Republican policies DEPEND on our being able to grow up and get our act together. I for one will never sacrifice them for the sake of satisfying hurt feelings, no matter who gets elected.

John McCain hates terrorists, except the ones that hate women. Those are just swell.

Your handle has just given me an idea - let's call it the TERRA PROJECT.

Oh no. Just realised. War on Terra etc. Will have to keep on thinking...
